Paris Fashion Week: Spring 2014 Trends.

Paris Fashion week drew the curtain on fashion month on a seriously anticlimactic note as Spring 2014 saw the end of Marc Jacobs’ influential 16 year reign at the house of Louis Vuitton. His farewell bid to Louis Vuitton was a dark one with a collection steeped in moody black to give off a glamorous funeral vibe reminiscent of his first collection for the house as its creative Director. On that note; these are some of the trends Paris has in store for Spring 2014.

One Shoulder. Chanel, Isabel Marant, Hussein Chalayan and Chloe all decreed the single shoulder as spring 2014’s erogenous zone.

Embellish Me. Glitter and sequins for shimmery dresses took over the runways at Lanvin, Saint Laurent, Manish Arora and Iris Van Herpen for an extremely bright spring 2014.

Coats. Several spring collections featured a lot of outer wear regardless of it being spring.

Metallic. Dior, Balmain, Jean Paul Gaultier, Saint Laurent and Lanvin all joined the metallic craze for spring 2014.

Appliques. Jewels, florals and broderie anglaise all worked as appliques for Elie Saab, Dries Van Noten, Giambattista Valli and Collette Dinnigan.

Tiers. There’s been plenty of tiers to pull skirts into shape and length at Emanuel Ungaro, Akris, Maxime  Simoens, Collette Dinnigan and Alexander McQueen.

Slits. For a dash of sexy, Leonard, Paul & Joe, Alexis Mabille and Artsuro Tayama among others brought out sassy thigh slits.

Pleats. A design feature seen on high rotation this season – were used excessively at Dries Van Noten, Issey Miyaki, Viktor & Rolf and Maison Rabih Kayrouz.

Stripes. Rippling stripes defined the vibe at Saint Laurent, Veronique Leroy, Cedric Charleir, Vanessa Bruno and Acne Studios.

Plaid. In all its various forms, plaid popped up on the Parisian runways of Vivienne Westwood, Chanel, Viktor & Rolf and Balmain.

Milan Fashion Week Spring 2014 Trends.

The city well known for its attitude of grand sophistication and elegance opened with a relaxed side step from Gucci unlike last season’s moody heroines which set the tone for the entire vibe from Milan, Costume National returned to Milan after 23 years and DSquared2 took us to a Hawaiian Holiday through their collection. Here is what Milan has to offer spring 2014.

Slits. Versace, Gucci and Costume National provided the dose of sexy with slashed skirts and dresses.

Ruffles. On collars, hems, tops and as embellishment on skirts, this girly frill is definitely back.

From L-R: Giorgio Armani, MSGM, Bottega Veneta, Emporio Armani and Marni

Sports Luxe. There was a feeling of athleticism at Prada with the sports socks, Emilio Pucci used wrestler inspired belts and Gucci went for sporty chic instead of high glamour.

Pencil Skirts. Tight and a little fitted to the silhouette, the pencil skirt made its mark on the runways of Milan.

Crop Tops. Bra and crop tops paired with maxi skirts, high waist pants and skirts peaked out of hooded coats and dainty shoulders.

From L-R: Fausto Puglisi, Jil Sander, Dsquared, Aquilano. Rimondi and Trussardi

Wide Leg Pants. More on the high-waist than low cut and slouchy in the silhouette that’s been going through out fashion month, wide leg pants are gaining momentum.

A Single Bare Shoulder.

From L-R: Givenchy, Lanvin, Vionnet, Isabel Marant and Nicolas Andreas Taralis

Forget plunging necklines, the one shoulder/ Grecian necklines are a hot ticket right now and are gaining more popularity amongst the celebrity set. A trend that’s noticeably been off the fashion radar in recent years, the one shoulder cut is currently enjoying a comeback after its appearance on the summer/spring 2013 runways of Lanvin, Isabel Marant, Vionnet, Givenchy and Chloe.
The 2013 Cannes Film Festival red carpets were over dozed on the single bare shoulder trend followed by awards and movie premiere red carpets. Angelina Jolie stepped out in a Saint Laurent one shoulder gown during the World War Z Tokyo premiere, Malin Akerman wore a red one shoulder jumpsuit which she teamed with nude pumps to the Disney and ABC's TCA Summer Press Tour Party. whilst Carmen Electra stepped out in blue ensemble for the 2013 Do Something Awards. To do this trend right, opt for a fuller shoulder be it long sleeved or short.
