What would summer/spring be without its fair share of cut outs? This burgeoning trend is popping up everywhere as seen on the red carpet at The Met Gala and of.
With exposed patches of skin at the chest, waist and everywhere else, it is clear the cut out trend is having its sexy little moment and isn’t going anywhere.
Both sophisticated and flirty – and just a little bit daring, its easy to keep the look chic by taking a less is more approach with smaller openings and unexpected placements.

She made her outfit night time appropriate by swiping a bold red onto her lips and and wearing black and gold kitten heels.

The Headscarf.

A headscarf is an easy way to make a hairstyle that little bit more special, and the Dolce and Gabbana summer/spring 2013 pinned twists were all the prettier for the printed scarves tied loosely around them. Marc by Marc Jacobs also featured wrapped heads for the summer/spring 2013 collection making the head scarf the accessory of choice for hair come summer/spring 2013.
Fendi made it the go to accessory for a quick hair fix in the Resort 2014 collection. Consider the humble hair wrap, which Juliana Schurig models not one, not two, but three different ways for Silvia Venturini Fendi and Karl Lagerfeld’s latest collection, and which keeps hairline fuzz and bad hair days comfortably—and stylishly—at bay.

From the Boardroom to Le Bain, the pantsuit is Spring 2013’s power player. Balmain went the bold shouldered route, and Victoria Beckham upped the sex appeal of her tuxedo with a skimpy bra top whilst at Stella McCartney’s the pantsuits were slouchy and sleek and tailored at Christian Dior’s.

Gothic Glamour.
![]() |
| From L-R: Missoni, Michael Kors, Lanvin and Saint Laurent |
Autumn’s Gothic glamour lends its sombre palette to Spring in a shift to black. Think black for the day in sweet summer dresses and light weight layers.
Complex textures and couture detailing bring rich flavor to this new way of seeing as seen at Stella McCartney during the summer/spring 2013 show were delicate broderie anglaise took a sinister twist, while at Dolce and Gabbana gowns were all adorned with delicate daisies.
Try textures to soften the look, via ruffles and pleats, lace and embellishment.
For braver dressers, dare to bare in sheer lace panels or thigh high split gowns. Leave plenty of skin on show – slashed fronts, exposed midriffs and bare shoulders offset the moody palette and lighten the overall feel of summer black.

Breezy Lace.
![]() |
| From L-R: Oscar De La Renta, Valentino, Roberto Cavalli, J.Mendel and Temperley London |
Used as both the main attraction and as inserts, lace was spotted all over the summer/spring 2013 collections and has now breezed its way onto the red carpet.
Whether crafted as a full on dress or skirt or used sparingly as chic inserts, this delicate, feminine fabric is lightweight and lovable striking a lovely balance. And playful colours counter the naughtiness of the lace creating a sexy attitude that is anything but stodgy.
Often conservative or coquettish, lace can get cheap looking quickly. Choose high quality material, and pair vibrant hues with shoes in the same colour family or in a metallic. Wear hair loose to keep the overall look easy going and fun.

Mid Riff Baring Tops.
![]() |
| From L-R: Dolce and Gabbana, Costume Nationale, Balmain, Balenciaga and Jill Stuart |
Balenciaga, Balmain, Dolce and Gabbana and Jill Stuart dished out swoon worthy midriff baring ensembles for their spring 2013/14 collections. The modest version of this trend shows off a sexy inch or two of a perfect slice of skin around your midriff without going all the way to your belly button.
The best news about spring’s upper body raised hemlines is how chic it looks with high-waisted pencil skirts and pants.
It’s no wonder this ab-flashing trend has made its way onto the red carpet courtesy of Kristen Stewart who wore Balenciaga summer/spring 2013. She paired high-waisted trousers and white bustier top with some striking Louboutins. Selena Gomez went for the Dolce and Gabbana spring 2013 tropical look in a printed cropped bustier top with a high waisted orange pencil skirt.
Peyton List kept it chic in her black cropped top paired with a black and white striped A-line skirt.
